Crown Lengthening

WHAT IS CROW LENGTHEINING

Crown lengthening is a dental procedure aimed at exposing more of a tooth's surface, usually to restore the tooth properly, whether through a crown or other dental restoration. Here's a breakdown of the treatment process:

  1. Evaluation: Your dentist will evaluate your teeth and gums to determine if crown lengthening is necessary. This typically involves X-rays and a thorough examination.
  2. Preparation: Before the procedure, your dentist will likely discuss the process with you, including any risks and benefits. They may also provide instructions on how to prepare, such as avoiding certain medications or foods.
  3. Procedure: During the crown lengthening procedure, the dentist will numb the area with local anesthesia to ensure you're comfortable. Then, they'll make small incisions in the gum tissue to access the tooth and bone underneath. They'll carefully remove a small amount of gum and bone tissue to expose more of the tooth's surface. In some cases, the procedure may involve multiple teeth.
  4. Suturing: After the necessary amount of tooth structure is exposed, the dentist will close the incisions with sutures. These sutures may be dissolvable or require removal at a later appointment.
  5. Recovery: You may experience some discomfort and swelling after the procedure, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication and ice packs. Your dentist may also prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection. It's essential to follow your dentist's post-operative instructions carefully to ensure proper healing.
  6. Follow-up: You'll likely need to schedule a follow-up appointment with your dentist to monitor your healing progress and remove any sutures if necessary.
  7. Final Restoration: Once the gums have healed completely, your dentist can proceed with the final restoration, such as placing a crown or filling, to restore the tooth's function and appearance.

It's important to note that while crown lengthening can effectively address certain dental issues, it's not suitable for everyone. Dr Alghazal will determine if you're a good candidate for the procedure based on your specific dental needs and overall oral health.
